Do you like working with children? Are you looking for a job that builds skills such as self-confidence, professionalism, and leadership? If you answered yes to both, then you’re up for the challenge and responsibility of becoming an American Red Cross-certified babysitter. Skills you will learn are how to supervise children and infants, choose safe, age-appropriate toys, identify safety hazards and prevent injuries, and find and interview for babysitting jobs. Participants must be 11 years old or older. Please bring a baby-sized doll for diapering and light lunch. Limit: 12

First Aid for Babysitters
Instructor: Ruth Timmer
It’s an emergency…now what? In this course, you will learn how to recognize an emergency, how to tell the difference between life-threatening and non-life threatening emergencies and how to react when an emergency occurs. You will learn how to administer first aid for injuries to muscles, bones and joints, methods of splinting, signals and care for sudden illnesses, and more. Participants must be 11 years of age or older. Space is limited to 12.

Infant and Child CPR for Babysitters
Instructor: Ruth Timmer
In this course, you will be taught what you need to know in the event of a life-threatening emergency-if a child is choking, isn’t moving or breathing because of a fall or a near drowning, for example. Learning and practicing CPR yourself-with an experienced instructor to guide you-will help you learn how to do it and remember what you’ve learned so you’ll feel prepared in an emergency. Participants must be 11 years of age or older. Limit: 12

Boater Safety
Boater Safety class is offered to ages 12 & over. This course teaches students how to operate a six-horse power or larger motor safely and in accordance with Michigan law. Upon successful completion of the course, a Boating Safety Certificate will be issued (mandatory in order to legally operate a power boat in Michigan waters). Participants must attend BOTH classes. Failure to attend both classes consecutively will result in forfeit of payment and class registration. Parents are encouraged to attend with their child but are not required. Class sizes are limited to 30.
Cost: $10.00

All classes will be instructed by Ottawa County Officers. Only registered paid participants will be allowed to attend class. Class sizes are limited to 30.

Practical Self Defense for Women

This class teaches a unique yet simple approach to personal safety and women’s self defense. The belief that pre-thought and situational investigation will enable you to deal faster and more effectively with personal attacks and the defense against them. A proven methodology that when applied empowers you to deal with threats ranging from identity theft and internet crimes to personal attacks, gang violence, domestic violence, mugging and rape.
No experience necessary; students are encouraged to come with a partner but not required. Please wear comfortable clothes. This class is for women ages 13 and up. Min: 8 Max: 20
