GROUP FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

21 DAY HEALTHY HABITS CHALLENGE (FREE)

Try out our new FREE, self-initiated healthy lifestyle challenge designed for anyone who wants to embrace a healthy lifestyle and kick start (or re-start) a fitness program! Why 21 days? According to research, this is how long it takes you to fully form a new habit. Each day you’ll be encouraged to add one healthy habit to your day! Your goal during the challenge is to practice self-discipline and try something that you’ve never tried before! Everyone who accepts the challenge will receive a 21-day calendar of healthy habits, a wristband as a reminder to stick with it, as well as a chance to win fitness swag bags throughout the challenge! You’ll be surprised at what can be accomplished in three short weeks, so accept the challenge today and be on your way to living a fuller, healthier more balanced life.

28 DAY FALL FITNESS CHALLENGE

Are you ready to get fit and healthy this fall? Take the Zeeland Recreation 28 Day Fall Fitness Challenge! During this challenge you will receive menu planning tools and information to help you clean up your diet, fitness tips and incentives to try various Zeeland Recreation fitness classes, along with weekly motivation and guidance from Jaci Lowther, certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant and Group Fitness Instructor. Weekly participation prizes will also be handed out to help you stay motivated. You will also have the option to connect with fellow challengers through our Challenge community page.

AQUATIC BODY CONDITIONING

Aquatic Body Conditioning, or ABC, will provide a full body workout designed to improve your energy level, flexibility, balance, agility and core strength. Class will be held in the shallow and deep end of the east (warm) pool. All fitness levels welcome to this multi-level workout! $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

BARRE CARDIO FIT

Get ready to “shake & burn” during this total body sculpting experience using body weight, light weights, balls, bands, & gliders. Barre combines the best of yoga, ballet, Pilates and strength-alternating between movement and stretch to build long, lean, toned muscles! Benefits may also include improved posture, increased flexibility, and a strengthened core. Be prepared to be both challenged and inspired! BEGINNING RUNNING CLUB: TRAIN FOR A 5K! 

In this nine-week training program, you will be training three times per week: two times a week at home and once a week as a group with Julie Lamer, certified group fitness trainer with over 26 years of running experience. The program will focus on gradually increasing the time and distance you run, not how fast you run. The training session will conclude with the group running together in the “Hearts in Motion 5K” on April 19, 2019. Program fee includes training sessions, a 10-visit adult fitness punch card and race registration fee.

BUTTS & GUTS

A workout designed to amp up not only core strength and lower body definition, but also work to improve balance, posture and power. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

CARDIO KICKBOXING

This circuit style class includes standing cardio kickboxing techniques, such as kicks and punches, plus fun and invigorating bag work. This fast-paced class incorporates both cardio and strength training that will rev up your heart rate and tackle those trouble zones. Light boxing gloves are encouraged but not required. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

CARDIO SCULPT

A multi-level class for those who want to develop muscle strength and endurance all in one! Working all major muscle groups, we’ll use a variety of props as well as our own body weight to give you a fun and energetic workout. We’ll combine the perfect amount of cardio with just the right strength training to accommodate all fitness levels. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

CARDIO, STRENGTH & STRETCH

A combination class with elements of cardio and strength training for a total body conditioning experience. And let’s not forget the core work and stretching that will be included using your own body weight for resistance. This is a class designed for all levels as high and low impact options are provided. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

CLASSICAL YOGA, LEVEL 1 

This beginner classical yoga class, taught in the Iyengar Method, focuses on alignment in basic yoga poses. Poses are introduced with progressive instructions to help you develop strength, stamina, balance, posture and flexibility. For those new to yoga or new to the Iyengar Method. No experience necessary. If you’re unsure between Levels 1 and 2, attend Level 1 and talk with the instructor for guidance on the best class for you. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

CLASSICAL YOGA, LEVEL 2 

Classical yoga, taught in the Iyengar Method, for the more experienced yoga student. Emphasis will be on increasing endurance and refining individual corrections. A wider variety of poses are studied more deeply and more complicated poses are introduced. Inversions are practiced regularly, as are backbends. Students are encouraged to attend the Level 1 class before joining Level 2, so Deb can recommend the best class for you. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

DEEP H20

Deep H2O uses the water’s resistance to deliver an excellent full body workout appropriate for all fitness levels. A buoyancy belt is provided to help participants maintain proper balance and posture in the water. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

ENERGY H20

Designed for all fitness levels, this aquatic class provides a work-at-your-own pace environment. Class uses a variety of equipment to help increase cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

FITNESS CENTER ORIENTATIONS

Orientations are held on the second Saturday of each month and led by one or more of our experienced staff. Fitness Center Orientations are a great way to learn the basics and become acclimated to our facility. Spots are limited, so pre-registration is recommended. Everyone who attends receives a gift. Orientations include the: A tour of the facility | Demonstration on how to use all strength machines | Instructions on how to program/use cardio machines | General workout info & guidance on getting started | Explanation of the benefits of group fitness classes in studio and in the pool.

GENTLE / RESTORATIVE YOGA

This gentle yoga class, taught in the Iyengar Method, focuses on alignment through basic and restorative yoga poses. Poses are introduced with progressive instructions to help you develop your strength, stamina, balance, posture and flexibility. Poses are taught with modifications and props to accommodate student’s needs. This is a great class for those new to yoga or for those who prefer a slower-paced, restorative class. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

HYDRO CARDIO 

Hydro Cardio is a high-energy aquatic class that combines shallow and deep water components for a challenging workout designed to improve strength, definition and endurance. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

INTEGRATIVE YOGA

This class is for those new to yoga, those who have practiced for years, and anyone in between. Integrative yoga seeks to strengthen the body, develop flexibility and balance, and encourage stability by intentionally progressing the body through a series of postures. Focus is placed on proper alignment, holding poses for longer periods of time, and layering breath into the movements. Sequencing will vary with instructor philosophy. No prior experience is necessary. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

LAP SWIMMING / WATER FITNESS

Aquatics Calendars

The Zeeland Recreation pools are available for your use for lap swimming and deep and shallow water walking. Barbells, fins, kickboards, noodles, pull buoys and exercise belts are available to enhance your water workout. Fitness Center members have access to this option for no extra cost anytime it is on our aquatics calendars. No registration needed… just show up! Free with Fitness Membership OR $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

  • Lap swimming is available for those 13 yrs and older during any of our scheduled lap swimming times
  • 8-12 yr old competitive swimmers are allowed to swim in designated open lap lanes during non-peak hours (after 6:30pm M-F and after 9am on Sat). Parents of 8-12 yr olds must supervising their child.
  • Split lane swimming is appropriate when there are two swimmers in a lane
  • Swim counter-clockwise (or “circle swim”) when there are three or more swimmers in a lane
  • All lanes are shared lanes and the lifeguard staff will regulate lane usage during busy times

 

LAZY MAN TRIATHLON

Need a little incentive to kick the new year off strong? Join our Annual Lazy Man Triathlon! Back by popular demand and better than ever! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate and, with four categories to choose from, there is something for everyone!

  • HOW IT WORKS: Register at the service desk. At registration, choose your challenge (Ironman, Olympic, Sprint or Team) and receive your mileage log. Everyone begins logging their mileage on January 2 and must have their challenge finished before February 9. Everyone receives a participation t-shirt and those who complete their challenge and submit a completed mileage log earn a chance to win great prizes! A winner will be selected from each challenge category to win one of the following fitness memberships (1-month, 3-month, 6-month or 1-year). Plus, one lucky person will be chosen to win a fitness tracker, valued at up to $200!
    • Ironman: 26.2-mile run/walk, 112-mile bike, 2.4-mile swim
    • Olympic: 6.2-mile run/walk, 24-mile bike, 1-mile swim
    • Sprint: 3.1-mile run/walk, 13.2-mile bike,1/2-mile swim
    • Team: Register as a team of 2 (or 3 max) and complete the challenge of your choice
    • Cost: $17.00
    • Dates: January 2 – February 9

 

MOVEMENT + MINDFULNESS

This combination of gentle stretching followed by mindfulness practices (using imagery, sound, breath and concentrated focus) allows the body to release stress, tightness, tension and anxiety. These practices increase clarity, circulation, energy and encourage personal growth. Participants will leave feeling calm, present and enjoy a stronger sense of self. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

POWER PILATES & YOGA

A powerful mat/barre Pilates and basic yoga class for all fitness levels. This is a non-impact class that has been designed to strengthen the core and improve posture and balance. SENIOR FIT : MIDDAY MOVERS

Midday Movers is an instructor-led aquatic exercise class designed to strengthen and tone muscles and give participants a gentle cardiovascular workout. Great music, good friends, and lots of enthusiasm is what you will find

This class is for the early riser! Sunrise Stretch & Stride is an instructor-led aquatic class designed to strengthen and tone muscles as well as increase flexibility, balance and coordination to carry out daily tasks more efficiently. SPIN

As you ride, motivating music plays as you are talked through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout. It burns serious calories and offers an awesome aerobic workout. All fitness levels welcome. $5 drop-in OR $35 punch card (10 punches).

STRONG

A high intensity interval training (HIIT) class workout unlike any other you’ve experienced! Each interval segment has been reversed engineered so that the beats in the song match every move, driving the intensity in a challenging progression that provides a total body workout. This class will help you reach your fitness goals faster. Using your own body weight, you will gain muscular endurance, tone and definition, and you will experience an increased after burn. VINYASA YOGA

Vinyasa is a series of poses linked together intentionally with one’s breath. Class offers a flow-style practice to build strength, endurance and the capacity to breathe while maintaining movement and proper alignment. Pace can range from slow to upbeat. WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE

Everyone will be happy to tell you what you should have done… after the fact. We will help you decide what you should do… before. This is a four night, six-hour class focusing on the mental and physical aspects of self-defense for women. As mature content will be discussed, participants must be 13 years or older. Each class includes 30 minutes per night on the psychological aspects of self-defense and one hour of physical training. Students will receive a workbook to guide them through this program.
