SPRING/SUMMER PROGRAMS

 

NEW: Aquatic Adventures in the Wetlands – What’s In The Water? (K-5th Graders | June 19, 21, 23)

This programs is led by Jennifer Soukhome, Zeeland Public Schools science teacher. Children will explore what is living in the water at the Zeeland High School wetland area. Participants will obtain the unique organisms living in the water by using aquatic nets and minnow traps. Children will learn and discover all about the wonderful things hiding in the water at the wetland area through their own observations. Children in grades K-2 must be accompanied by a guardian. Participants should meet at the Zeeland East Wetlands Pavilion located just south of Riley Street and Zeeland Athletic Complex on 96th Ave. Please use the drive next to Waypoint Community Church. Art Exploration Camp (K – 5th Graders | June 12-16 @ New Groningen Elementary School | $70, Zeeland Resident | $82, Non-Resident)
Exploration fosters creativity. In this camp, participants will explore a variety of art media and age appropriate techniques to create art together. Times are listed below. Costello Rock Band Camp (12-18 yr olds | June 13-15 | 12:30 – 4pm | $100, Zeeland Resident | $112, Non-Resident)
Participants aged 12-18 years old will receive direct, small group, and full class instruction from ZPS employees, Jeff and Michael Costello, who have extensive performing experience in rock bands. Students will form a band and learn performance techniques as well as instruction pertaining to the music business and the operation of sound and lighting equipment (students who are only interested in sound and lighting are encouraged to attend). The camp will take place at Cityside Middle School’s band and choir rooms. Attendees will also participate in a final performance on the last evening of the camp at Lawrence Street Park Bowl on June 15th at 7pm. Additional instructors include Cityside Middle School teacher, John Hann, and Creekside Middle School custodian, Doug Veldhuis. Participants should be moderately proficient at their instrument (guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums, vocals). Drummers should be able to keep a simple beat. Keyboardists/guitarists should know how to play chords. Participants are encouraged to bring their own guitar and keyboard equipment, but drums will be provided. Registration deadline is June 2. Motor Movement (3-5 year olds | Mondays or Tuesdays @ Zeeland Recreation | $50, Zeeland Resident | $62, Non-Resident)

Pre-school children ages 3-5, are invited to participate in Motor Movement, a popular class that will focus on tumbling, physical awareness and large motor skills with music, games and other fun activities. These classes take place on Monday or Tuesday mornings at Zeeland Recreation, studio A. Each Monday and Tuesday session has 9am-10am options and 10am-11am options. There are three separate sessions each year (listed below). All children must be potty trained. Classes are available Monday or Tuesday mornings at 9:00am or 10:00am and will run for 10 week sessions. $50. To register online, click here call (616) 748-3230.

Paintbrushes and Pirouettes (3rd-5th Gr | 9am–1pm on July 21 @ Cityside MS, Room 124 | $44, Zeeland Res | $56, Non-Resident)
How is visual art inspired by dance? How is dance inspired by visual art? How can we use dance to create visual art? Explore the answers to these questions and more in this cross curricular course incorporating a variety of artistic mediums and dance disciplines. Students will explore the works of highly celebrated French Impressionist painter and sculptor, Edgar Degas, who enjoyed observing and capturing the beauty of ballet on canvas as well as with his sculptures. Students will leave with their own dance inspired and designed works of art and art inspired choreography. Artist should come able to be barefoot and be prepared to get messy. NEW: Plants in the Wetlands (K-5 Graders | June 12, 14, 16 | Zeeland East Wetlands Pavilion)

The emphasis in the session will be on plants. Children will learn and discover all about the wonderful plants at the wetlands through their own observations. Children in grades K-2 must be accompanied by a guardian. Sing Song Yoga® Classic (6-11 yr olds | Thursdays | 6pm – 6:45pm | Cityside MS Orchestra Room | $25, Zeeland Resident | $37, Non-Resident)

Sing Song Yoga® is an international kids’ musical yoga program in which song lyrics instruct children how to get into the poses. Class includes yoga poses, yoga-based activities and songs to tie it all together. Classes are on Thursdays at Cityside Middle School orchestra room, with two different session options (listed below). Summer Fun Camp (4-7 yr olds | July 10-13, 9am – 12pm | Cityside MS Gym | $60, Zeeland Resident | $72, Non-Resident)

Join us for summer fun at our “Summer Fun Camp”! Designed for children ages 4-7, each day campers will participate in activities and games outlined by our theme of the day! Campers are asked to wear tennis shoes and to bring a snack and personal water bottle. Space is limited. NEW: Summer Science Camp (3rd-8th Graders | July 17-21 | Zeeland West HS, Room E131 | $50, Zeeland Resident | $62, Non-Resident)

During this one-week camp led by ZPS science teacher, Brad Stevens, campers will have the opportunity to experience an authentic, hands on experience. Students will be posed a driving question about a scientific phenomenon to conduct investigation and develop models to develop their own understanding. This process takes students through an authentic inquiry experience, and gives them the opportunity to act as actual scientist to construct their own understanding of the world around them. The opportunity gives students an experience that will help prepare them for middle and high school science courses. Participants will receive a camp t-shirt. NEW: Wetland Water Wonders (K-5 Graders | June 26, 28, 30 | Zeeland East Wetlands Pavilion)

This programs is led by Jennifer Soukhome, Zeeland Public Schools science teacher. Parents and children will explore the water of the wetlands. Children will learn and discover all about the water at the wetland area through their own observations. Children will also run a simple experiment and lean about the effects of erosion on the water. Children in grades K-2 must be accompanied by a guardian. Participants should meet at the Zeeland East Wetlands Pavilion located just south of Riley Street and Zeeland Athletic Complex on 96th Ave. Please use the drive next to Waypoint Community Church.
