SPRING/SUMMER PROGRAMS

 

Adults & Senior Wetland Wonders Tours (June 13, 15 OR June 20, 22 OR June 27, 29 | 9-10am | ZE Wetlands Pavilion | $10, Zeeland Resident | $22, Non-Resident)

Join Jennifer Soukhome, Zeeland Public Schools science teacher, for a leisurely walk through the wetlands. The paths consist of wooden bridges, pea gravel and pavement. Participants will learn about the wonderful things living at the wetlands and will be able to explore this unique natural setting. In this class, you will learn to incorporate information from outside sources into word processing documents and techniques such as mail merge, creating templates, integrating images, spreadsheets, databases, how to print labels and envelopes. To register, click here or call (616) 748-3230.

Learn how to preserve two different types of jams using homegrown fruit that your family will enjoy and you will enjoy giving as gifts to that special person in your life. Canning: Tomatoes (Tue, Aug 29 | 6:30 – 8:30pm | Cityside MS, Room 135 | $22, Zeeland Resident | $34, Non-Resident)

Do you love tomatoes? Learn how to can and preserve tomatoes to make salsa, pizza sauce, and spaghetti sauce. You will also make a jar of jalapeno pepper jelly to take home! Herbs 101 (Thur, Mar 16 | 6 – 8:30pm | Cityside MS Library | Instructor: Tina VanderKlok | $30, Zeeland Resident | $42, Non-Resident)

Ways to heal our bodies and prevent illness lie right outside our door but often go unnoticed. This one day class provides an introduction to 10 herbs that can be used as medicine and in the kitchen. Explore their traditional uses, ways to grow them at home, the systems of the body they directly affect, and more! Participants will walk away with a guide to each herb covered that includes both culinary and medicinal recipes. Introduction to Advanced Spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel (Mar 20 & 27 | 6:30pm-9:30pm | Zeeland East HS, Room 118 | $48, Zeeland Resident | $60, Non-Resident)

Introduction to Spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel (Mar 6 & 13 | 6:30pm-9:30pm | Zeeland East HS, Room 118 | $48, Zeeland Resident | $60, Non-Resident)
This course is designed for individuals who have little or no knowledge of Excel and would like to learn the basic features and concepts of the program. Participants will become familiar with basic spreadsheet functions, data input, computer math, copying, moving, borders, charting, formulas, and formats. Understanding Your Digital Camera, Level 1 (Apr 12, 19, 26, May 3 | 6-8pm | Cityside MS Library | $80, Zeeland Resident | $92, Non-Resident)

Master your digital single lens camera (DSLR)! Don’t let your camera control you. Learn which functions to turn off and which will help you make great pictures: landscapes, sports, portraits, etc. This course is led by Peter Taylor, photographer and teacher, with 20 years of experience. Understanding Your Digital Camera, Level 2 (May 10, 17, 24, 31 | 6-8pm | Cityside MS Library | $80, Zeeland Resident | $92, Non-Resident)

Participants will learn advanced techniques and camera controls for particular situations with an emphasis on portraiture. Basic computer skills for preparing images for print will be covered too: sizing; cropping; adjusting exposure, contrast, and color; minor retouching. Students will receive personal attention and hands-on instruction. This course is led by Peter Taylor, photographer and teacher, with 20 years of experience. Minimum computer skills assumed. Canning: Applesauce (Tue, Oct 3 | 6:30-8:30pm OR 7:30-9:30pm | Cityside MS, Room 135 | $22, Zeeland Resident | $45, Non-Resident)

Homemade applesauce is one of those things that make you wonder, after you whip up a batch, why more folks don’t make it. It truly is one of the easiest and most delicious treats you can make from scratch, and it doesn’t take much time at all. Each participant will make applesauce from a half bushel of apples. Euchre Challenge (Thursdays from 7pm-9pm | Oct – Dec OR Jan – Mar | Cityside MS Library | $25 per couple)

Do you need a night out? Want to make some new friends and play some cards? Join us for a Euchre Challenge. If you know how to play, you’re old enough to sign up! A minimum of 12 teams is required to run the tournament. Registration opens August 15, 2017.

 

Introduction to Microsoft Word (Sept OR Jan – 2017 Dates TBA | 6:30pm-9:30pm | Zeeland East HS, Room 118 | $48, Zeeland Resident | $60, Non-Resident)
This course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of Word and will cover beginning concepts using a word processor. Topics will include typing and editing documents, fonts, typefaces, and tabs. The focus of the class will be to create documents and then change and rearrange them. Registration opens August 15, 2017.

 

Introduction to PowerPoint (Jan or Feb – Exact 2017 Dates TBA | 6:30pm-9:30pm | Zeeland East HS, Room 118 | $48, Zeeland Resident | $60, Non-Resident)
This class is designed for those who are interested in learning the fundamentals needed to create, modify, and reorder a slideshow. Students will learn how to add backgrounds, pictures, charts and animation. Registration opens August 15, 2017.

 

Pie Crusts (October 10 OR October 17 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm | Cityside Middle School, Room 135 | $15, Zeeland Resident | $27, Non-Resident)

Who doesn’t love a flaky pie crust? For many it’s always been difficult to achieve, despite most people’s claims that their recipe is THE flakiest pie crust in existence. We’ll use up some of those extra apples and everyone will take home a delicious pie made with their homemade crust. Pigeon River Guided Kayak Trip (Sept & Oct – 2017 dates TBA | Pigeon River – West Olive | $40, Zeeland Resident | $52, Non-Resident)

A brief introduction to kayaking will take place prior to your guided paddle down the Pigeon River, led by Kristen Hintz and the Ottawa County Parks staff. Adults 18 yrs old and up will enjoy the sights and sounds as you travel the 3.5 mile stretch to Sheldon Landon. Return transportation will be organized through carpool shuttle. Kayaks will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you have one! Registration opens August 15, 2017.

Women’s Self Defense (13 yrs old – Adults | Mondays, 6pm-7:30pm | $75, Zeeland Resident | $87, Non-Resident )
Everyone will be happy to tell you what you should have done…after the fact. We will help you decide what you should do…before. This is a 4 night-6 hour class focusing on the mental and physical aspects of self-defense for women. As mature content will be discussed, participants must be 13 years or older. Each class includes 30 minutes per night on the psychological aspects of self-defense and 1 hour of physical training. Students will receive a workbook to guide them through this program.
